At its inception in 1976, the Crisis Centre was associated with and administered under the auspices of the Birmingham Branch of the YWCA. It was originally set up in a large old dwelling house, which was leased from the City of Birmingham, refurbished, and adapted with the help of funds provided through the City of Birmingham Housing Committee.
By 1984 it had become apparent that the work of the Centre needed facilities for follow up and after care which was not possible in the restricted accommodation then available and a proposal was made to the City that a Half-way house be established. After some eighteen months discussion and negotiation, a site and funds of £0.75m were made available and work on the present hostel was started in the winter of 1985/6. The Hostel was formally opened by the Princess Royal on the 8th April 1987 and became a registered charity in 1988.
